The Department of Achaeology, Institute of History is the centre of archaeological research at the Tallinn University. The staff consists currently of seven archaeologists. Target-financed research project, rooted in archaeology "Land, Sea and People: Estonia on its way from the Iron Age to the Medieval Period. North-Estonia, West-Estonia and Estonian islands 600-1600 AD" is organised within the frames of the department.
Since 2004, the Department includes the Chair of Archaeology, providing academic education at BA, MA and PhD level. Students can choose to study archaeology in integration with either subjects of history or anthropology (the latter in co-operation with Estonian Institute of Humanities). At MA level, it is possible to choose between prehistoric and medieval archaeology modules.
In the Institute of History, archaeological research is also conducted in the Department of Archeobiology and Ancient Technology, and in the Department of Archaeological Collections with the richest single collection of Estonian archaeological finds. Archaeological publications are found at the department library, located at the premises of the Institute of History.
